Enter room dimensions and an optional price per square yard to get total area, square yards needed, and an estimated cost.
Estimates only.
Carpet is sold by the square yard, but rooms are measured in feet. Multiply length by width for square feet, add a waste percentage for seams and trimming, then divide by 9 to convert to square yards. Multiply by price per square yard for a cost estimate.
A 10% waste allowance is typical for a single rectangular room. Add more (15-20%) for rooms with alcoves, closets, or hallways, or when the carpet has a large pattern repeat that requires matching. Carpet is usually sold in 12-foot wide rolls, so odd-shaped rooms can generate more waste than the calculator shows.
Measure the length and width of the room in feet and multiply them together for square footage. Add 10% for waste, then divide by 9 to convert to square yards, which is how carpet is sold. For rooms with closets or alcoves, measure each section separately and add them together.
At a typical installed price of $3-$7 per square foot (materials plus labor), a 2,000 sq ft home costs roughly $6,000-$14,000. Budget carpet runs lower; premium wool or thick pile runs higher. These are general estimates; get quotes from local installers for accurate pricing.
A 12 x 12 room is 144 sq ft. With a 10% waste factor that is about 158 sq ft, or roughly 17.6 square yards. At $25-$40 per sq yd installed, expect to pay approximately $440-$700 for that room.
A 20 x 20 room is 400 sq ft. With 10% waste you need about 440 sq ft, or roughly 49 square yards. At $25-$40 per sq yd installed, budget approximately $1,225-$1,960. Prices vary significantly by carpet type and region.
